A father's pride in the award winning Australian Memorial at Pukeahu
The stunning Australian Memorial at Pukeahu in the capital is the first NZILA Resene Pride of Place award to feature in our video series. Mark Newdick of Mark Newdick Landscape Architects talks us through the project and the emotions it brought out in him.
The tall, red sandstone columns of the Australian War Memorial, grouped and interspersed with red flowering eucalyptus trees, immediately calls to mind the red continent of our neighbour, while use of basalt represents New Zealand's landform. Polished black basalt panels inserted within the columns reflect the sky and bring an ephemeral quality to the strongly rooted columns.
