Prising open Wellington's new heart: Te Ngākau Civic Square
On Saturday 14 March, the plaza area of Te Ngākau Civic Square in Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington re-opened alongside the reimagined innerland of the central library, Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui.
The Wellington City Council celebrated the mahi behind this long anticipated transformation with an article titled Revitalising Te Ngākau Civic Square with new design which noted that the square’s design is guided by the coastal landscape and the awa (streams) that once flowed through this area to the sea.
Editor’s note: Landscape Architecture Aotearoa (LAA) will be bringing readers further insights from Warren and Mahoney’s Michael Hawes and Sophie Jacques before our next fortnightly subscribers‘ e-bulletin on 7 April.
